Magic Of The Journey

by

All of us, every single one of us, will arrive at the same destination. It’s our journey there that will matter to us and our loved ones. It’s a journey that is filled with magic, every single day, not just during that amazing vacation, big promotion, or some spectacular life event. You just have to slow down and notice it. As a child you knew this and somewhere along the way you forgot.

An experiment in Washington DC

Simple. When do you feel most alive? What makes your heart sing? The last time you lost track of time what were you doing? What is something you have been doing with joy most of your life? Maybe it’s drawing, or building, or coaching. Whatever it is, that’s your gift. Still not sure? Try journaling at the end of each day. Write down when were you the happiest, most relaxed, most joyful? Your journal will begin to reveal a pattern. Whatever that is make time for it every day. Maybe some days that will only be 5 minutes.

Then find someone who could benefit from your gift.

In Washington DC, the Washington Post set up an experiment. Joshua Bell, one of the top musicians of the world played on a 3.5-million-dollar violin for about 45 minutes. During this time, he played one of the most intricate pieces ever written. Since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. A few adults tossed Joshua some money and hurried on. The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old child who was pushed along by his mother. This action was repeated by several other children. Children see the magic, hear the magic, feel the magic. It’s there some of us just stopped seeing.

When did you stop seeing the magic

Ask yourself when did you stop taking time to see the magic? You have the freedom to see it in common places, every day all the time.

It really isn’t about the destination. Once you arrive or get that thing, you may experience happiness for a short time but then it’s over. Your destinations or milestones should be giving you a direction in life but not happiness.

The Journey is where life is happening

Focusing on the future or the past leads to increased dissatisfaction with the now. The now or the present is when life actually happens. It’s where you learn, it’s where you connect with others, it’s where things are happening.

Tips for focusing on the journey

1. Try and stay present in the moment. Don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future.

2. Reflect on a daily basis what went well, what you learned, and what you are grateful for.

3. Make sure to set time for you each day.

4. Celebrate the progress along the way.
